Appalachian Studies Minor

Appalachian Studies is a 15-unit minor that can be pursued by any undergraduate student. Whether you were born and raised in Appalachia or are a recent arrival, there are a broad range of academic inquiries that can be pursued about it, from its history and culture (including its indigenous peoples) to its music or its religion, to its native flora and fauna. This range is demonstrated by the instructors and topics that are options in this minor.

Appalachia is not just a mountain chain, it is a culture comprised of many regional sub-cultures. A deeper knowledge and understanding of it can not only enrich you as an individual, it can enhance your career skills in many fields, from wildlife and fisheries or botany, to working in national or state parks in the region.

The mountains are calling you.
