Be wary of potential scams while searching for Outside Scholarships - remember, you should never have to pay to apply for scholarships! If you have questions or concerns about scholarships you are considering applying for, please reach out to us at financialaid@tntech.edu or scholarships@tntech.edu. We will check to confirm that the scholarships you are applying for are legitimate!
Submitting Outside Scholarships to the Office of Financial Aid
When receiving an Outside Scholarship, it is important that you inform the Office of Financial Aid that you have received the award - you are responsible for ensuring that the financial aid listed through Tennessee Tech reflects all scholarship funds you receive for a school year. Informing the Office of Financial Aid of any outside scholarships received ensures that you do not inadvertently violate federal regulations concerning total eligibility for other forms of financial aid. You should never place a scholarship check you receive into your own personal account.
- If you, the student, receive an Outside Scholarship check
-
Please submit the received check immediately to the Office of Financial Aid. For the received scholarship to post before Payment/Confirmation deadlines, please submit no later than August 1 for Fall, December 15 for Spring, and April 15 for Summer. Checks submitted after those dates may not be applied in time to confirm your schedule.
-
When submitting your award to the Office of Financial Aid, make sure the scholarship check includes your name and Tennessee Tech ID (T#) listed on the Memo portion of the check. If the check you receive does not include your T#, when submitting your scholarship make sure you include that information on a separate document. If you go by a nickname or your middle name, include your your first legal name as well.
-
Look to see whether the received check is written to either Tennessee Tech, or to both Tennessee Tech and you. If your name is included in the "Pay to the Order of" line of the check, you must provide your signature on the back of the check for submitting it to the Office of Financial Aid.
-
Before submitting your check to the Office of Financial Aid, make a copy of your award letter or any information included with the scholarship check. We will need a copy of this information, but you should also keep a copy for your records.
-
- If you, the donor, wish to send award checks directly to Tennessee Tech
-
Please include the student's full name and Tennessee Tech ID (T#) in the Memo section of the check and/or in an accompanying letter. If the student goes by a nickname or a middle name, be sure to use the student's legal first name.
-
The check should be made payable to Tennessee Tech University. If the check is made payable to both Tennessee Tech and the student, the student will need to endorse the check before the awarded amount is posted to their account. Making the check payable to the student may delay the award, as our office will have to contact the student and ask them to sign the check in person. If the donor must make the check out to the student, please follow the instructions below for sending the check to Tennessee Tech.
-
The donor should attach either a copy of the award letter or a cover letter that includes any instructions we must follow. For example, the included letter must address whether the awarded scholarship should apply entirely to the fall semester, or the amount received split between fall and spring.
-
The donor should include a contact person's name, phone number, and email address in case we have questions about the scholarship or its requirements.
-
All checks are deposited within two business days of being received. If requested, our office will mail a letter to the donor confirming that the scholarship was received and applied to the recipient's account. During particularly busy times of the year, such as the months of July, August, and January, the receipt letter will be sent approximately one month after the scholarship check is applied. During other months, the receipt letter will generally be sent within two business weeks after receipt of the scholarship check.
-
Scholarship checks and any accompanying paperwork or information should be mailed to:

529 / Prepaid Plans
529 Plans, or Prepaid Plans, are college savings plans which pay for a specific number of credit hours, based upon the type of plan purchased. There are two kinds of Prepaid Plans: Personal Plans, which are initiated through banks or credit unions, and State Plans. Both plans require separate steps to submit the allotted funds to Tennessee Tech.
- Submitting your Personal Plan to Tennessee Tech:
Parents/guardians who have opened a Personal Plan for their student(s) should contact their provider and:
-
Inform them that their student is attending Tennessee Tech
-
Request the amount they would like withdrawn to submit to Tech
-
Have their provider send the funds with the student's name and T-Number included to:
TTU Financial Aid
1000 N. Dixie
Campus Box 5076
Cookeville, TN 38505
If requested, a soft credit can be added to a student's account, which allows the student to confirm their schedule before the plan funds are received. If the parent/guardian or student would like a soft credit placed on their account until the Office of Financial Aid receives the plan funds, please contact our office at financialaid@tntech.edu.
-
- Submitting your State Plan to Tennessee Tech:
To submit a State Plan to Tennessee Tech, parents/guardians should:
-
Contact their plan provider and inform them that their student(s) are attending Tennessee Tech
-
Email the Office of Financial Aid at financialaid@tntech.edu and confirm the name of their provider and submission of funds
Once notified, the Office of Financial Aid will post a soft credit to the student's account prior to that semester's confirmation deadline. The office will then bill the appropriate state at census, which occurs two weeks after the first day of classes. Once funds are received from the state, the soft credit will be removed from the student's account and replaced with the actual funds. Please note that any excess funds will deposit to the student's account of choice up to a week after the state plan funds are received and posted.
