Tennessee Tech’s Mad Topics program and Center Stage are excited to bring you this amazing event!

“Dangerous Gifts: Rethinking Madness, Meaning, and the Edge of What We Know (A Center Stage Event)”

This Center Stage event will introduce the work of Sascha Altman DuBrul — co-founder of The Icarus Project and author of the forthcoming Dangerous Gifts.

DuBrul will examine misconceptions surrounding madness across cultures, encouraging us to reflect on the possibility that there is a deeper wisdom within those we do not understand. Mad Topics believes deeply in the value of lived experience as expertise, complemented by clinical expertise. DuBrul will share his lived experience in locked wards, grassroots movements, and ancient spiritual traditions to explore the thin line between breakdown and breakthrough.

Like Mad Topics’ dual purpose of empowering those with lived experience to stand on level footing with clinical perspectives, DuBrul also brings a dual perspective: He has worn the shoes of both a psychiatric patient and a changemaker inside the system. His work invites people from all walks of life to explore how they create meaning, whether that be in regards to self, society, or interactions with others.

This official Mad Topics event with funding from the Center Stage program will be hosted at 7:00 PM on Thursday, September 25th in Stonecipher 113 on Tennessee Tech’s campus. This event is open to the public and is free!

Please mark your calendars — we look forward to seeing you there!
